Tesla Roadster vs. a plane, LA to SF

Tesla's new Roadster hits 60 mph in 0.81 seconds and, Tesla says, it can fly. We put the flying Tesla in our trip model.

The race · LA to SF

The plane takes 4h 33m. The Roadster Rocket takes 53m.

  1. WinnerRoadster Rocket If the FAA ever says yes · hops over I-5 traffic at Mach .5, 338 mi

    53m

Hypothetical. In the demo the cold-gas thrusters flew it for seconds, not 300 miles. Tesla says the Rocket is not approved for public road use.

  2. Plane LAX → SFO, door to door

    4h 33m

Includes getting to the airport, security, boarding and the ride at the other end.

  3. Any Tesla on the road Legal speeds, charging stops, 381 mi

    6h 55m

The 0.81s launch saves you 3 seconds. Then you hit traffic on the 405.

Flying used to win LA to SF. Then the car learned to fly.

Rocket time = 338 straight-line miles ÷ 383 mph, pretending Musk's Mach .5 top-speed goal worked in the air. Tesla hasn't given a flying speed or range. Plane and road times are live from our model. Hypothetical. Obey speed limits. Top speed is Tesla's track claim.

What Tesla actually showed

Cold-gas thrusters

Ten nozzles of compressed air. Tesla says the car refills its own tank.

Suction system

A fan that pulls the car down. It drove up a vertical ramp and stopped upside down.

Active aero

Moving bodywork for downforce on the track.

  • Backflip
  • Jump over five Teslas
  • Mid-air barrel roll
  • Side flip from a standstill

Thrust · limited release

Two seats. Rear thrusters for the 0–60 in under 1 second.

Rocket · invite only

One seat. “So yes, it can fly.” Not approved for public road use.

Common questions

Is there a flying Tesla?
Tesla says the invite-only Roadster Rocket version can fly using cold-gas thrusters. That does not establish that it can make a sustained flight between cities: Tesla has not supplied a flying speed or range. Tesla also says the Rocket is not approved for public road use. This page is a just-for-fun comparison, not a claim that you can replace a commercial flight with one today.
Why does the page say both Roadster and Rocket?
Roadster is the car; Rocket is the name of its invite-only, one-seat version that Tesla says can fly. The Thrust version has two seats and rear thrusters for acceleration. Our hypothetical flying race uses the Roadster Rocket, not a normal Roadster or a Model 3 or Model Y.
How fast is the new Roadster?
The October 15, 2026 reveal demo reported 0 to 60 mph in 0.81 seconds. Tesla claims a top speed over 230 mph, and Musk described a goal of about Mach 0.5. These are reported demo figures and manufacturer claims, not independent test results from this site. Mach 0.5 is not a published flying-speed specification. Track performance is not a recommendation to exceed public-road speed limits.
Could the Roadster Rocket really fly LA to San Francisco in 53 minutes?
That is the joke, not a demonstrated capability. We divide the route's straight-line distance by an assumed 383 mph, treating Musk's Mach 0.5 goal as if it worked in the air for the whole trip. The calculation leaves out takeoff, landing, acceleration, refilling and any airspace restrictions. Tesla has not announced a flying range or speed that would support this journey. The displayed time can change with the route distance in our model.
Is a Boeing 737 actually faster?
In cruise, yes: we use roughly 530 mph for the 737, versus the Rocket's hypothetical 383 mph. The Roadster's claimed 230+ mph ground top speed is compared with about 160 mph at liftoff, not the jet's maximum speed. The jet's acceleration, liftoff speed, seating and legroom figures are approximate and vary by aircraft, load and airline. The Rocket only wins our imaginary door-to-door race because we pretend it can skip the airport, not because it is faster than a cruising jet.
When does it go on sale, and what does it cost?
At the reveal, Musk said production would start in 2028; pricing was not announced. That is an announced target, not a guaranteed delivery date. We do not estimate the Rocket's purchase price or operating costs, and the ordinary Tesla trip costs below are not Roadster Rocket costs.
Is driving LA to San Francisco cheaper than flying?
In the ordinary trip comparison shown here, the Tesla costs less but the plane is faster door to door. Driving includes legal-speed travel and charging stops; flying includes airport access, security, boarding and travel at the other end. These are model estimates, not live airfare quotes or guaranteed journey times. Your fare, charging rate, traffic and airport choices can change the result. The full breakdown explains the assumptions; the hypothetical Rocket race does not change that real-trip result.
Is this an official Tesla or Boeing comparison?
No. Fly or Tesla? is an independent project, not an official Tesla or Boeing publication or endorsement. Roadster claims are attributed to Tesla and the linked reporting; the 737 figures are approximate comparisons. The flying race is entertainment, not travel, aviation or safety advice. Obey speed limits and do not attempt the demonstrated stunts on public roads.
